Welcome

Welcome to Grasshopper Cottage which journals the remodeling, food, gardening and life in a 1930's Alabama cottage. The name came from the paint color, not from an infestation of grasshoppers. There are 287 homes on tree lined streets surrounding a central grassy mall. This historic district has been listed on the National Historic Register in Washington, D.C. Most of the lots were created to be large enough for a sustainable garden and a carriage house for a cow, chicken and wagon/carriage in additional to the main cottage.

Snowing in Sweet Home Alabama!!

The wind is blowing and it is snowing hard now...huge wet flakes! This is so unusual that my 10 year old golden retriever, Allie, is sniffing and prancing through the snow carefully. She doesn't understand what is all over the grass and her paws because snow is so rare, especially snow that sticks to the ground. It is beginning to cover the roads as the temperature drops. Central Alabama doesn't have snow removal equipment, simply because it's never needed. We just wait for it to melt...which usually happens the next day. School was out early today and the kids played outside with make-shift sleds.

Looking down my street at the front yards you can see how pretty it is and it is still coming down.

The broccoli in the garden is covered with snow and you can see the onions in the back sticking through the snow. We need to enjoy it quickly as the skies are clearing in another hour and melting will begin. Tomorrow is supposed to be sunny all day.
